Graduate researchers investigate fracture, fatigue, and failure in ships and offshore structures. Their work is grounded in structural mechanics and combines simulation, monitoring, and integrity assessment. They also translate new methods into well-engineered software using Git, automated testing, continuous integration, documentation, and carefully supervised AI-assisted development.

Areas we are recruiting in

  • Ductile fracture, engineering critical assessment, and fitness-for-service evaluation
  • Fatigue assessment and monitoring of mooring lines and dynamic power cables
  • Collision, impact, and crashworthiness of marine structures
  • Ultimate strength and progressive collapse of ship and offshore structures
  • Structural digital twins and scientific software: state estimation, surrogate modelling, and differentiable simulation
  • Structural assessment of alternative-fuel containment systems (emerging direction)

Visiting researchers

We host visiting researchers and exchange students for defined periods of joint work. Please write with your research interests, the period you have in mind, and any funding you already hold.

Industry collaboration

We work with classification societies, offshore wind developers, shipyards, and technology developers on mooring and cable integrity, structural assessment, fatigue and fracture, and alternative fuel containment. Collaboration ranges from focused technical studies to multi-year funded projects.

What we look for

  • An undergraduate GPA of 3.50 or above in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. Engineers from related fields may also qualify.
  • Competence in at least one programming language, for example Python or C++.
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis concepts.
  • Prior involvement in relevant work strengthens an application: capstone design, research internships, or CAE competitions such as the KSOE competition.
  • Experience with version control, scientific programming, or responsible AI-assisted development is an advantage.

What we expect

  • Independent investigation using computational tools such as Abaqus and OrcaFlex.
  • Completion of the thesis within two years.
  • At least one publication in a domestic or international journal or conference proceedings.

This training is demonstrated in practice: the lab's packages are available through the SMI-Lab-Inha GitHub organisation, and the public packages show the standard of work expected from students.
